Self Tanning Routine

If you know me, you know I love to self tan. I always get questions on it, so I figured I would share my whole routine with you guys. I’ll have all of my favorite products linked at the end.

One of the most important things is how you take care of your skin before applying the self tanner. I always shave and exfoliate, and I think it’s important to regularly moisturize to prevent dry patches.

After I shave and exfoliate in the shower, I wait for my skin to air dry completely. Another key step is to apply moisturizer to your feet, ankles, hands, and wrists before applying the self tanner. This will prevent those areas from getting too dark or streaky.

I then go in with a mitt and apply the tanner! I start with my legs and feet and work my way up my body. I don’t use self tanner on my face but that’s just personal preference. I usually do this all at night. I let it dry for a few minutes and then hop into bed. If it’s a rinse off tanner, I’ll jump in the shower in the morning to rinse off the color guard without using any body wash. If not, I just wake up and use regular lotion. And you’re good to go!

It gets easier the more you do it. I’d definitely recommend practicing a few times before trying to self tan for an event, but it can be a great alternative to the tanning beds and a quick way to get some color.

I’ll list some of my favorite products below for y’all!

I always use the Nivea Creme because I really think it’s the best moisturizer to start off your self tanning routine.

I don’t really have a mitt that I prefer over another. I’ll use whatever I can find at the store. Right now I’m using the b.tan I don’t want tan on my hands mitt and I really like it.

On to tanners. I have so many that I alternate through depending on what type of color I want and what I’m doing.

My number one go to is the Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun solely because you don’t have to rinse it off and I’m lazy. It’s a mousse so I just apply it at night and I’m noticeably darker the next morning. Plus, it’s super affordable.

I also like the Ulta Beauty Bronze Glow Express Tan Dark Tinted Mousse. This used to be my go to every week, but there are a couple downfalls in my opinion. One being that you have to rinse it off. Since I don’t usually shower in the morning, I prefer to shower at night, having to rinse it off in the morning just adds an extra step to my routine. The second is that technically you wear it for up to 8 hours, and THEN it starts to develop, so you really need to apply it at least 2 days before an event, which takes a lot more planning.

I like the Coola Sunless Tan Luminizing Body Serum to layer over top of a mousse for just a little extra glow. It adds the slightest bit of color but it really gives your skin that bronzed and sun kissed look.

I occasionally use the Jergens Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer as a gradual tanner. I do this more in the summer to maintain some color at all times, but it’s super easy to use. You just apply it like regular lotion. I do use a mitt with it but I don’t bother with the moisturizer around my feet and hands because it’s so gradual.

And there you have it! It truly does get easier with practice. Feel free to DM me with any questions!!!
